Web Wednesday – Maker Camp and Slow Motion

Welcome to another installment of Web Wednesday, a feature celebrating all that is good on the web. Let’s step away from doom and gloom for a minute and enjoy how the web allows people to share their passions, talents, and knowledge.

1. Maker Camp – While I hardly ever use Google+ these days, I do occasionally use it for basic photo editing when I’m on my work computer. Recently when logging into Google+ to edit a photo, I discovered Maker Camp. Sponsored by MAKE Magazine, Maker Camp is an interactive online summer camp for teens (and the young at heart), dedicated to creating, building, and discovering.

As a social network, Google+ leaves a lot to be desired, but it makes a great venue for online learning and collaboration. From homemade combustion cannons, to glow-in-the-dark candy, to animated gifs, Maker Camp has something for everyone.

I wish I had to time to follow Maker Camp and take part in their activities, but it is amazing. If you have kids, or are a kid at heart, check you Maker Camp and make something fun.

2. The Slow Mo Guys – Do you like videos of things in slow motion? If you answered yes, then this is the Youtube channel for you. The Slow Mo Guys are two British gentlemen with an outstanding HD slow motion camera (that I lust for (the camera, not the men)), a sense of adventure, and a fair amount of free time.

Their videos range from the silly (Slow Mo Guy, Dan taking a water-filled soccer ball to the face), to the unexpected (did you know that you can cut a watermelon in half with rubber bands?), to the staggeringly beautiful (sparks in slow motion are breath-taking).

In addition to the wonder of seeing mundane things in slow motion, these videos are noteworthy for the infectious enthusiasm shared by the two Slow Mo Guys. It’s hard to watch these videos without being amazed by the beauty of the world around us.

Well that concludes another Web Wednesday. If you’ve discovered anything on the web that amazes you, I’d love to see it. See you next week!
